The Society for School, University and Adolescent Medicine of the Slovenian Medical Association (www.szd.si) brings together specialists in school medicine, paediatricians and other physicians working with children, schoolchildren, adolescents and students.

The Slovenian Society for School and University Medicine of the Slovenian Medical Association was founded in 1981 on the initiative of school physicians, school medicine specialists, registrars and those who worked in school health settings. The creation of an independent society within the Slovenian Medical Association was largely due to the strong support of the staff at the University Institute for Health and Social Care (today the Institute for Public Health Republic of Slovenia) – Unit for School Children Health Care, under the leadership of Dr Fina Dovečar and with the engagement of Dr Urška Arko. The Statutes of the Society and the plan of activities were adopted at the first Elective Assembly.

In 2013, the name was changed to the Society for School, Student and Adolescent Medicine of the Slovenian Medical Association, with the addition of adolescent medicine, which is being developed as an independent health care specialty covering the period of adolescence, defined by the WHO as a phase of life between childhood and adulthood, from the ages 10 to 19.

The Society cooperates with other Societies and Associations of the Slovenian Medical Association as well as international associations.

It is a member of EUSUHM – European Union for School and University Health and Medicine, where it has had a member on the Executive Committee since 2000.

It is also a member of IAAH – International Association for Adolescent Health.

Since Slovenia’s independence, the Society holds a congress every four years. So far, the following congresses have taken place: 1993 (Radenci); 1997 (Brdo pri Kranju); 2001 (Novo mesto); 2005 (Maribor); in 2009, the 5th Congress was held in Ljubljana and was dedicated to the 100^th anniversary of the school health services in Slovenia; 2013 (Debeli Rtič) and 2017 (Portorož).

In 2003, the Society was the local organiser of the EUSUHM Congress “Caring for Europe’s Young Generations” in Ljubljana. In 2008, it hosted the IAAH 14th European Annual Meeting “Reducing Health Inequality among Youth, Role of Adolescent/School Medicine”. The annual meeting was held in Portorož from 25–27 September.

In addition to the quadrennial congresses, the Society organises three to four symposiums each year. The Society has also participated in some international projects.
